Introduction:
Coriolus versicolor supplementation, has been used in the United Kingdom in both small animals (tablet form) since 1999 and in horses (powder form) since early 2000.

In small animals (dogs and cats), Coriolus versicolor has been used to improve the immune state of small animals undergoing chemotherapy as well as for terminal cancer care (i.e. palliative care). More recently, Coriolus versicolor has been used to support the immune system in small animals undergoing a viral challenge from either Epstein Barr Virus or other viral challenges.

In horses and ponies, Coriolus versicolor is used to assist the immune system those animals suffering from Post Viral Syndrome which provokes a form of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Furthermore, Coriolus versicolor supplementation may improve the state of sarcoids (skin tumours) caused by the Papova virus.

Corpet: Applications for Small Pets (Cats and Dogs):
There is a variety of fatigue related conditions in small pets that can be improved with Corpet supplementation:

• Age Related Fatigue :  after a certain age, the immune system in dogs and cats do require assistance. For this reason, Coriolus versicolor is recommended as a \"tonic\" to assist the immune system in small animals over 10 years old


• Prior / Post Surgery :  three weeks prior to surgery, an animals immune system should be supported in order to assist the healing process. For four weeks after surgery the immune system should be supported to accelerate the healing process. For this reason, Coriolus versicolor supplementation is recommended to assist the immune system in animals undergoing surgery


• Viral Challenges :  certain viruses (Epstein Barr Virus and FEVL ) have been linked to rheumatism, chronic fatigue syndrome and feline leukaemia. When such viruses are detected, one should consider the use of Coriolus versicolor to support the animals immune system to eliminate and/ or limit the fatigue provoked by the respective virus


• Prior and During Chemotherapy :  the use of chemotherapy deplete an animals immune system. For this reason, the use of Coriolus versicolor supplementation should be considered to support the immune system


• Palliative Cancer Care :  cancer depletes an animalss immune system and leads to a increase in telomerase activity and decrease in interleukin 12 activity. In a recent clinical trial in 30 Stage III and Stage IV cancer patients, Coriolus versicolor supplementation demonstrated an ability to decrease telomerase activity and increase interleukin 12 activity over a 120 day period. For animals in terminal phase of cancer care, Coriolus versicolor supplementation reduces fatigue and improves appetite; leading to an improvement in quality of life.

Mechanism of Action:
Corpet is a non-specific imunomodulator that gradually (over two weeks) assists the immune system by:

• Increasing white blood count.


• Increasing CD4 levels


• Increasing interleukin 12 activity


• Decreasing interleukin 5 activity


• Decreasing telomerase activity

In a more general manner, over a six week period, Corpet supplementation rebalances the relationship between the cytokine TH1 and TH2 immune systems, when challenged by either a virus or tumor activity.

Contra-Indications:
There are no contra-indications for Corpet.

However, as antibiotics usually disrupt the digestive system, in small animals thereby reducing the absorption of Corpet, Corpet supplementation should be undertaken 14 days after the termination of antibiotic use.
