Japanese name: Himematsutake
Botanical name:  Agaricus subrufescens Peck, Agaricus blazei Murrill
English name:  Reddish Psalliota, God's mushroom
Recommended dose: 3-6 tablets per day

What is Blazei?
Agaricus subrufescens Peck/Agaricus blazei Murrill, ABM for short, is found in various parts of the world, including southeastern Tibet, southwestern Yunnan and western Sichuan in mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Israel, Hawai, northeastern North America, Sweden, and in the rainforests of Brazil.

In addition to its anti-oxidant actions it has also attracted the attention of scientific researchers for its immune-strengthening, anti-allergic, anti-diabetes and anti-viral actions.

It has also been prized as a gastronomic, edible mushroom.

Chemical constituents of Blazei:
Agaricus subrufescens Peck/Agaricus blazei Murrill displays a well-balanced concentration of vitamins, minerals, amino-acids as well as a high proportion of polysaccharides.  Defined peptide-glucans, in particular 1-4 alpha-D-glucan,  1-6 beta-D-glucan, ergosterin (the precursor of vitamin D), and a  compound referred to as A-1 have been specified as the principle active ingredients of Agaricus blazei Murrill in terms of therapeutic efficacy 1.

Blazei viewed as Traditional Chinese Medicine herb:
The Chinese herbal medicine actions of Agaricus subrufescens Peck/Agaricus blazei Murrill show characteristics of belonging to the following categories:

  • Tonify Source Qi
  • Nourish Yin
  • Resolve Fire Toxins
  • Invigorate Blood

For example its role in improving insulin resistance in diabetes type-2 patients 12  suggests that at least part of its action is to replenish the Yin; insulin tends to produce signs and symptomes of Yin Deficiency in patients who use it.  This conclusion is partially reinforced by the fact that a very common component of diabetes pathology, when subjected to a Chinese medicine differential diagnosis, is Deficiency of Yin of various kinds.

In common with many mushrooms and fungi Agaricus subrufescens Peck/Agaricus blazei Murrill has notable anti-oxidant properties 8.  Leaving aside the bio-chemical descriptions of these properties, at least part of their action in this respect falls within the category of Invigorate Blood without injuring the Yin.  Blazei not only Invigorates Blood without injuring the Yin, but also seems to actively Nourish Yin.

Therefore accurate application of Blazei-MRL can be facilitated by directing it to those patients whose Chinese medicine differentiation incorporates at least some element of Yin Deficiency, or in cases where it is necessary to Invigorate Blood without injuring the Yin.

Manufacturing Process
Blazei-MRL is not an extract but instead contains both the mycelium  and the primordia (young fruiting bodies)  of Agaricus blazei grown aseptically into a biomass.  The biomass is then manufactured into tablets, each containing 500mg.

Cultivation Process of Blazei-MRL
MRL Ltd.´s Agaricus blazei powder contains both mycelium and primordia (young fruit body) cultivated into a biomass that is grown on a sterilised (autoclaved) substrate.
This cultivation process ensures the powder is free from contamination by other fungi and that pesticides and heavy metals are absent.

The cultivation system is proprietary, allowing for standardised production of Agaricus blazei. The powder biomass is then sealed in plastic containers.

Certified Organic (USA & EU)
The fungal biomass Agaricus Blazei that comprises Blazei-MRL is certified 100% Organic in the United States by Quality Assurance International (Certificate No. 103491-A).
In December of 2005, MRL powder gained EU organic certification in accordance with EU Council Regulation (EEC) No. 2092/91 by Quality Assurance International (Certificate No. 105493-A).
