Basic Information:
The name of Ku Ding Cha conveys the thrill of its extreme bitterness and its shape in the form of a spike. It has a background, secondary sweet taste of anise.

Ku Ding Cha is in fact not from the tea plant but from the Wax Tree plant, Ligustrum robustum.

The bitter taste of Ku Ding Cha accounts for its marked ability to Clear Heat, in Chinese medicine terms.

Ku Ding Cha is useful for invasions of Wind Heat in the form of common colds or flu when there are signs of red or itchy eyes, raised thirst, headache, cough and runny nose. In this respect Ku Ding Cha is similar in action to the formula Sang Ju Yin.

Ku Ding Cha, however, also benefits the digestion as well as enhancing mental acuity and improving the memory.

In scientific terms Ku Ding Cha lowers cholesterol, lowers blood pressure, improves cardiac function, maintains proper body weight and has anti-oxidant properties in common with green teas from the tea plant.

How to prepare
Place the tea leaves in the scalded pot or cup. The amount should be just one stalk per large cup or pot. Add some cold water before adding a small amount of boiling water. This is to keep the temperature below 80 Celsius; green teas should never be subjected to boiling temperature. Leave to steep for 5 minutes. The first decoction may be either discarded or drunk according to preference.
