Description:

Gou Qi Zi of Premium Quality, dried and unsulphered:
Gou Qi Zi, Wolfberry, is a very commonly used cooking berry, as well as being one of the most important herbs in the Chinese materia medica.

Gou Qi Zi has recently become very popular outside of China due to marketing drives with claims on various bio-chemical grounds.  We are happy to simply state below the Chinese Medicine properties which have fulfilled the demanding requirements of Chinese doctors and Chinese cooks for at least two millennia.

Tonify Blood

Attributes:
  • Sweet, signifies that Gou Qi Zi tonifies
  • Neutral, signifying that Gou Qi Zi neither warms nor cools, making Gou Qi Zi adaptable to both cold and warm pathologies
  • Enters Liver, Lung and Kidney organs and/or Channels, signifying that Gou Qi Zi benefits undernourished eyes, undernourished lungs and the ravages of anno domini
Actions:
  • Nourishes and tonifies Liver and Kidney
  • Benefits the Essence (Jing) and brightens the eyes
  • Enriches Yin and moistens the Lung
Syndromes:
  • Deficiency of Yin and Blood.
  • Deficiency of Liver Blood and Kidney Essence (Jing) failing to nourish the eyes
  • Consumptive cough from Deficiency of Lung and Kidney Yin
Culinary uses:
  • Use in baking:  scones, muffins, tarts, cakes
  • Use in desserts:  yoghurt, smoothies, stewed fruit, drinks
  • Use in savoury cooking:  omelettes, with meat and fish, with tofu and tempeh, in stews, stir-fries
  • Eat them as a snack as they are, with or without other dried fruits and nuts
Recipe:
Gou Qi Zi / Wolfberry and shredded Pork or tempeh

Ingredients:
  • Gou Qi Zi  100 grams
  • Lean pork  or defrosted tempeh 500 grams
  • Bamboo shoots  100 grams
  • Lard or oil  30 grams
  • Salt, sugar, brown rice or other wine, sesame oil, starch, seasoning and soya sauce / tamari to taste
Preparation:

  1. Soak the Gou Qi Zi to moisten for about 30 minutes

  2. Cut the pork or tempeh and bamboo shoots into 6 or 7 mm shreds.

  3. Put the lard or oil into your pan and bring to heat

  4. Add the pork or tempeh and the bamboo shoots and braize for a few minutes

  5. Mix the wine with starch, add to the pan and stir-fry quickly until the starch thickens

  6. Add the sugar, soy sauce / tamari, salt and seasonings to taste and stir thoroughly

  7. Add the soaked Gou Qi Zi and stir fry quickly and briefly

  8. Drizzle sesame oil over all and serve


Actions:
Nourish and replenish Kidney Yin, strengthen the Upright Qi (constitution / immune system), benefit the eyesight

Indications:
Tiredness, dizziness, poor vision, catarrhact, impotence, ache in the lower back.
Can be used to strengthen the constitution and prolong life.
